Current COMELEC Commissioner Sheriff M. Abas was confirmed today as the new Chairman of the Philippines’ Commission on Elections (COMELEC) by the Commission of Appointments (CA).
Chairman Sheriff M. Abas is a dedicated visionary whose sheer commitment to serve the public and maintain a high level of standards in terms of professionalism is rooted from his eight (8) years experience working as an Attorney VI and acting Assistant Regional Director of Civil Service Commission in Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. He is lawyer, a law professor and a missionary who aims to maintain equality and fair treatment to all Filipino citizens — whatever gender, race or culture they belong
Commissioner Abas acquired his Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (Batch 1998-99) from Notre Dame University in Cotabato City where his passion to serve public interest was fortified. He then pursued his studies and earned his baccalaureate degree in Law at Ateneo De Davao University (Batch 2003-2004) and passed the Philippine Bar Exams a year after his graduation.
Commissioner Abas started his career as a General Practitioner of Law. While practicing, he was able to impart not only his scholastic knowledge in Administrative Law but also his advocacies and principles by taking the role of an educator in Notre Dame of Cotabato – College of Law for three (3) years. His public servitude commenced when accepted the opportunity to work in the Civil Service Commission at Regional Office No. 12 on June 2007 and stayed in service until April 2015 as he moved to this Commission.
Even as a novice of the office of Commission on Elections (COMELEC), he was able to work in several COMSTRAT 1116 activities and earn his accomplishments. He is currently the Champion of Pillar VI, which is involved in Professional Competency and as Vice Champion of two pillars, specially Pillar III for Voters Education and Pillar V for Empowerment of Field Offices and Personnel. In the imminent future, he aims to improve and deliver an even better and more effective and efficient service to the public as he continues to serve as one of the Commissioners of the COMELEC.
